| During the China 12th Five-Year-Plan, China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and China Petrochemical Corporation (SINOPEC) are boosting their investments in offshore projects. It is predicted that during the "12th Five-Year-Plan Period ” ,the market scale of the Chinese offshore oil field service industry (including drilling) will reach RMB 190 billion. Under this industry developing momentum, some experts has claimed that the depletion of oil and gas resources in shallow water, coupled with the increase in energy demand, will force the China petroleum industry to move into deeper water. |

| Increasing Deep and Ultra-deep Water Exploration and Production is Driving the Growth of the FPSO Industry. However, it is not possible to extrapolate the shallow water technology into deep waters. To meet the market demand, the petroleum industry is developing and implemen-ting new technologies based on limited experience, as full-scale experi-mental verification is not always possible. There is an urgent need to study these new technologies, as the consequences of failure of such systems are enormous. A failure, apart from causing financial loss, may also lead to environmental hazards such as oil spills, which may endanger the sea flora and fauna. |
